Flower Arranging Portal to the Past
My favorite works as a Montessori child were flower arranging, color tablets, and story writing. What do you know? I continue to love what I loved as a little girl. Here is a secret about me: I am an introvert. I am well practiced in the art of looking like an extrovert! But after a long week of work at MCC or a challenging series of days, intense with people and helping them to meet their needs, or face their fears, or deal with lives difficulties, frustrations, and bereavements — as is often the case with the job duties of Heads of Schools (and Rabbis and Ministers), I need silence and no people in order to restore myself. My garden is an oasis for me.
Here is a Memorial Day flower arrangement, thinking of my mother, Carole Wolfe Korngold, with the beautiful pink and red peonies. There is one purple Siberian Iris balanced with a singular purple Allium — all the other Allium in our garden are white. As well the wonderful Giant Cat Mint. Some stalks of white blossoms from the Mock Orange bring additional fragrance and a lightness to the Peonie mix. We planted a pair of Mock Orange on either side of the garden path to celebrate our anniversary many years ago and it continues to bloom right on time! Please enjoy. Thank you for taking some time with me to arrange flowers, a skill I learned in Montessori school all those years ago, and to let their fragrance and simple awe inspiring beauty stretch into the past linking memories with the joy of today.
